Crisp air, twinkling trees lining the streets, and festivities seemingly everywhere you turn — yes, Vancouver is magical during the holidays. And there’s certainly no shortage of ways to celebrate. From landmark events to newer seasonal favourites, these are our three top ways to get into the spirit.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Vancouver Christmas Market is an Old World tradition that has quickly become of the the city’s most anticipated winter gatherings. Taking inspiration from European holiday markets, the event features more than 80 artisan huts vending handcrafted gifts, along with a great selection of food, drink — be sure to try some Glühwein (mulled wine) or German beer — and live entertainment. Plus, with its location at Jack Poole Plaza, shoppers will also get to enjoy great views of the water and the North Shore.
The Stanley Park Railway has been a popular tourist attraction since 1964. A replica of Canadian Pacific Railway Engine #374, the first transcontinental passenger train to bring visitors to Vancouver in the late 1880s, the train takes riders through a windy, two kilometer track through the forest. It always gets into the holiday spirit, too — and, throughout December, it becomes the Bright Nights Christmas Train! Featuring beautiful displays, live performances, and three million sparkling lights in total, it’s a magical experience for all ages.
Over one million lights turn the already-beautiful VanDusen Gardens into a winter wonderland. Sprawling across 15 acres and including the Bloedel Conservatory, the Festival of Lights features a variety of themed areas: dancing light shows on Livingstone Lake, a candle grotto, a tented fireside lounge (perfect to warm up in), and more. Check out the food trucks for some tasty treats or enjoy a romantic meal at Seasons in the Park.
With the exception of the Christmas Market (that one’s walking distance!), all these seasonal celebrations are just a short drive away from the Georgian Court Hotel Vancouver. Along with being conveniently located, our boutique hotel also features luxurious accommodations, excellent on-site amenities, and affordable rates. Get in touch today.
