6 Must-See Shows at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival

The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival is one of the city’s most highly anticipated musical events of the year.
 
Taking place from June 28 to July 1, the 34th annual event plays host to some of the greatest artists from around the world in some of Vancouver’s best music venues — including the Georgian Court Hotel’s very own Frankie’s Jazz Club.
 
This year, the lineup features artists in an eclectic medley of genres from classic variations of jazz to hip-hop to psychedelic rock. Keep reading for our top five picks:
 

Wu-Tang Clan - June 23 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre


Wu-Tang has been a groundbreaking force in hip-hop for more than 25 years, with lyrics that combine the reality of the streets and martial arts mythologies.
 

Tara Kannangara - June 24 at Frankie’s Jazz Club 


The JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter combines jazz, pop, electronic, musical theatre to create her unique, genre-bending sound.
 

Mazacote - June 25 at Frankie’s Jazz Club

 
Danceable, groovy tunes are promised for those who attend this show! The six-piece world music band has deep roots in Nicaragua, Mozambique, and Colombia.
 

The Roots - June 28 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

 
Also serving as the Tonight Show’s official house band, the Roots are known as one of the most respected and creative groups in hip-hop.
 

Herbie Hancock - June 29 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

 
The legendary pianist and composer behind songs like “Cantaloupe Island” and “Watermelon Man” has been an influential innovator in jazz music for six decades. The 14 Grammy Award-winning Hancock will be performing with his quartet.
 

Cory Weeds - June 30 at Frankie’s Jazz Club

 
A jazz icon in Vancouver for running the late great Cellar jazz club and a frequent performer at Frankie’s, saxophonist Cory Weeds will play alongside a stacked lineup of talented musicians including Chris Gestrin on organ.
